Bunny’s Donut Shop in Jacksonville
If you’re looking to try a new breakfast spot in Jacksonville, look no further than Bunny's Donut Shop. This business opened in April and is perfect for those who have early mornings. You can order breakfast as early as 5:00 am on Tuesday-Friday and 7:00 am on the weekends.
Bunny’s Donuts is located in the South Point Plaza off of Bowden Road. This is a family owned business that supports the local community. All unsold items are donated to the City Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter, so no food is wasted. This alone immediately made me love the business, as I know how often food is thrown out in the restaurant industry.
I recently visited Bunny’s and I am here to tell you all about my experience and what to order.
Bunny’s Donuts: A Cozy Breakfast Spot
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked donuts and the friendly smiles of the staff. Bunny's offers a unique blend of sweet and savory treats, perfect for a morning pick-me-up or a family outing.
Upon scoping out the shop, I noticed a children’s play area. This is a family-owned business that wants to create an environment for families. If you have energetic little ones but want to go out for breakfast, this is a perfect spot. There is a kid’s table as well as games and a chalkboard.
The walls are covered in cute decor which provides great photo opportunities.
Donuts
Sweet and savory menu items are offered, but I want to begin by discussing the donuts. Everything is made fresh daily; the owner comes to the shop at midnight to begin preparing all of the baked goods.
Bunny’s offers a variety of donuts, ranging from classic to creative. I tried three different donuts: key lime, strawberry crumble, and maple bacon.
When deciding which donut to try first, I lunged for the key lime donut, as that is my favorite flavor. As soon as I took a bite of it, I immediately knew how fresh it was. It was so fluffy and flavorful. Not to mention heavy on the key lime filling; I absolutely loved the tanginess mixed with the crunchy pie crust crumbles on top. You can check out my Instagram reel for a pull apart video of this donut.
Next, I tried the strawberry crumble. It reminded me exactly of those strawberry ice cream pops from back in the day. It was tasty and nostalgic!
Lastly, I tried maple bacon, which came loaded with bacon. I am not a huge bacon lover (I typically will eat turkey bacon), so I took the remainder of the donut home to my husband. He on the other hand, loves bacon and happily finished it.
I also tried the apple fritter, which is their best seller. This isn’t technically a donut, but it is MASSIVE. I ended up breaking off pieces since it was so big. This is great for sharing! I loved how it was sweet, heavy on the cinnamon, and had a very slight crunch from the apples.
When choosing which donuts to try, I recommend selecting whichever flavors you like, as these donuts taste exactly like their inspiration. For example, if you like key lime pie, you will love the key lime donut. This may sound self-explanatory, but I have tried donuts from other places that had just a hint of the inspiration flavor, while Bunny’s makes their donuts taste exactly like the inspiration.
Kolaches and Lumpia
In addition to donuts, Bunny’s offers savory items. I began with trying the kolaches, which come in three flavors: jalapeño, beef sausage, and original. The kolaches also come with mustard and sweet chili dipping sauces.
I loved the jalapeno kolache. It was the perfect blend of spicy and savory and went really well with the mustard. I personally liked the mustard with all of the kolaches and think the sweet chili sauce better suits the lumpia, which I will discuss in a second.
The beef sausage and original tasted very similar to me; the original was just a tad bit smaller. These are great breakfast options if you are in a hurry and want to eat something that is filling but isn’t messy.
Another non-messy breakfast option is the veggie lumpia. I cannot decide if I like the lumpia or jalapeño kolache more- they were both excellent! The sweet chili sauce really took this to the next level. I ended up eating the leftovers later on straight from the fridge, and this menu item tastes just as great cold as it does warm!
Breakfast Sandwiches
Bunny’s offers a variety of breakfast sandwiches with the option to add sausage, bacon, or ham.
It was recommended that I try The Mahony, which includes sausage, bacon, egg, and cheese… served on a cinnamon bun!
I will be fully honest, I was not sure how to feel about this sandwich. I love pineapple on pizza and am a huge advocate for sweet and savory. But I just never expected to eat a breakfast sandwich served on a pastry.
As soon as I took one bite, I immediately knew why this was on the menu. The saltiness from the bacon and sausage combined with the savory egg and cheese perfectly blend with the sweetness of the cinnamon bun holding everything together. This really is one of those “don’t knock it until you try it” type of menu items.
If you are looking for a smaller breakfast sandwich, you can order egg and cheese on a biscuit or croissant. Biscuits and gravy is also offered.
Coffee
Last but not least, I finished this lovely meal with an iced coffee. This came fully decorated with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. It was very flavorful and great for those who prefer their coffee on the sweeter side.
I usually drink my coffee black or with just almond milk, no sweetener, so this was not something I would drink first thing in the morning. Sometimes I will choose to have a sweeter coffee later in the day or for dessert, which I would totally order this then. I do know a lot of coffee drinkers that add syrup flavorings or sugar; if you are one of those types, you should give this a try!
I highly recommend stopping by Bunny’s Donut Shop and supporting this local, family-owned business. The owner and his daughter were the absolute sweetest and truly cared about me having a good experience. Whether you prefer a sweet or savory breakfast, there is something for everyone here. They are closed on Mondays, but open every other day during the week.
Thank you, Bunny’s, for having me!
